“We are a kindergarten-through-12 organization, and what really drives our education is the learning-to-learn framework,” explains Charlie Huynh, regional director of teaching and learning, primary, for OSG North America. “So that’s what we embed through all of our primary and our secondary education.”
Huynh notes that the structure deliberately shifts responsibility onto the student. While primary grades focus on scaffolding foundational skills like planning, collaboration, and communication, middle and secondary students transition to greater autonomy.
Timetables feature dedicated study periods with fewer face-to-face hours, empowering students to manage their own to-do lists, choose their workspaces, and make independent decisions, with teachers acting as coaches rather than lecturers.
This philosophy is physically manifested in the architecture of the schools. Campuses—including the local Indianapolis site—feature open learning centers completely devoid of traditional formal classrooms. Instead, the layout includes studios for direct instruction, alongside focus zones, semi-collaborative zones, and collaborative zones tailored to specific tasks.
Bridging Technology and Proactive Learning
OneSchool’s forward-thinking approach extends into digital literacy and modern workplace preparation. Rather than shying away from emerging technologies, the institution is building proactive solutions.
“We’re a very progressive organization, and we’re thinking ahead to see what our students need in order to be future-ready or workplace-ready,” Huynh says. “We’re actually being proactive and we’re developing AI literacy programs… from primary to secondary to prepare them because we know AI is going to be the future. We don’t want our students to fall behind. We want them to know how to use it responsibly and ethically.”
This adaptability also served the global network well during the COVID-19 pandemic, as existing digital infrastructure and hybrid teaching models allowed instruction to continue largely uninterrupted.
Connecting Campuses and Communities
Beyond academics, the student experience is enriched by global extended learning programs—such as international debate clubs and business pitch competitions modeled after “Shark Tank”—and robust community outreach initiatives.
Regional Director of Communications Kristen Perini emphasizes that outreach is woven into the daily identity of the school through core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, and compassion.
“Our OneSchool Global (OSG) Outreach Program across North America began as a way to build a friendly neighbor relationship with the communities surrounding our campuses,” Perini explains. “What happened next was a broader awareness of how much impact OSG’s actions benefited others beyond being a good neighbor.”
From student leadership teams organizing “Hot Dogs for Heroes” lunches to honor local police and firefighters, to Indianapolis students raising funds and gathering personal care packages for the homeless community in Lafayette, the emphasis remains squarely on authentic human connection.
Whether collaborating across international borders via Zoom or sharing student-authored children’s books with residents at local nursing homes, OneSchool Global aims to cultivate more than just skilled workers.
“We live in a world where we’re finding there’s a lot less empathy from students, so we want to ensure that we are always connected to our school community, our local community, and the wider community,” Huynh notes. “Just teaching students how to interact with different types of people, how to understand different perspectives, that’s really important to us.”
