When powerhouse vocalist Don Farrell steps onto the stage at Feinstein’s at Hotel Carmichael, he isn’t just performing a tribute — he’s inviting the audience into a shared journey of music, memory and community.
On Friday, Oct. 16, Farrell and the Terry Woods Jazz Quartet will present “BECAUSE OF YOU…A Tribute to Tony Bennett,” paying homage to one of the most revered and multifaceted icons in American music history.
For Farrell, diving into the life and repertoire of Tony Bennett revealed a man whose character matched his incredible artistic talent.
“First of all, these are huge shoes to step into. Lady Gaga, Aretha Franklin and Frank Sinatra called him the best singer in the business,” Farrell said. “Whenever I’m working on shows of these icons, I’m trying to find humorous, self-deprecating moments here and there. With Frank Sinatra, there’s a lot, but with Tony Bennett, everywhere I looked, I found stories about him that were nothing but upstanding, classy, gentlemanly qualities. He’s truly one of the last of the legends, and was such a good man.'”
Beyond the smooth vocals and legendary chart-toppers, Bennett’s life history holds remarkable depth.
“We all assume we know who he is, and then we realize there are so many more layers to who this individual was,” Farrell said. “Not only did everybody want him to cover their songs, but then you find out he was in the Battle of the Bulge, in foxholes during World War II and liberating concentration camps. My mind was blown when I found out about that.”
Farrell noted that Bennett’s creative spirit started early, encouraged by his father to pursue both music and visual arts. Bennett became an accomplished painter, earning the distinction of having three of his original paintings in the permanent collection at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.
“Everywhere I turned, I was like, ‘Really?’ This man had so much to him,” Farrell said. “It’s a true honor to be able to sing the songs that he made famous.”
An Intimate Experience at Feinstein’s
While Bennett performed in massive concert halls across the globe, Farrell emphasizes that bringing this tribute to Feinstein’s at Hotel Carmichael offers an unparalleled connection between the artist and the audience.
“That’s a beautiful, unique quality about Feinstein’s at Hotel Carmichael — the intimacy of it,” Farrell said. “I try to introduce myself to people before I even take the stage while they’re having dinner. By the end of the evening, I’m really hoping that we’ve created a friendship and strengthened the fabric of our community through that one evening together. That’s the power of what music and storytelling can do.”
Farrell added that the venue’s atmosphere elevates every performance.
“There’s really no other place that I’ve performed yet in Hamilton County like it,” Farrell said. “It just exudes charm, sophistication and world-class style to support the artists that we celebrate, like Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra and Neil Diamond. I can see the reactions directly of the audience in front of me, so we’re really on that journey together. The audience is a big player in that because that’s really where the magic happens. We’re all in the business of memory-making, happiness, theater and music, and you can’t have a better venue than Feinstein’s to accomplish that.”
The Songs That Connect Us
The performance will feature a range of Bennett’s hits, including “Rags to Riches,” “Cold, Cold Heart,” “The Good Life,” and his signature classic, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.”
For Farrell, the title track holds a particularly poignant emotional weight.
“‘Because of You’ was his first big hit,” Farrell said. “Before he passed, he would sing to his wife as he was standing at the grand piano in his home in New York during his morning vocalizing. He asked her what she’d like to hear, and she said, ‘How about ‘Because of You’? I love that song.’ He sang that to her, and it was one of the last ones he sang. What a beautiful song that is.”
