Carmel Christkindlmarkt CEO/President Maria Adele Rosenfeld shared, “Last year, for the first time, we were voted the 2023 Best Local Tourist/Seasonal Attraction by the community [Indy’s Best Things 2023 Indy Star competition]. We were up against venues [such] as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indianapolis Zoo and other popular attractions. We were nominated again this year, which is really incredible.”
Additionally, Carmel Christkindlmarkt has been featured in several local, regional, national and international publications, including National Geographic, since its inception in 2017.
A Celebration of German Culture
At the heart of the Carmel Christkindlmarkt is the goal of offering a deeper understanding of German culture. Visitors can enjoy a taste of German culinary delights, such as bratwurst, pretzels and mulled wine while browsing through an array of handmade gifts and holiday decorations.
The connection to Germany is strengthened by Carmel’s sister-city relationship with Seiffen, a small town located in the heart of the Ore Mountains in Saxony near the Czech border. Often referred to as “Spielzeugstadt” or “toy town” in Germany, Seiffen is known for its centuries-old woodworking traditions. This partnership not only enriches the market experience but also creates opportunities for knowledge exchange. Seiffen’s famous wooden ornaments, nutcrackers and other traditional crafts are featured at the Christkindlmarkt, allowing visitors to appreciate ancient woodworking practices that have been passed down through generations.
“Sandy Richardson [VP of cultural programs and event manager] and I attended Seiffen’s 700th Anniversary as a town in July, and we were honored to be in the parade representing Carmel… there’s a lot of future potential with this relationship, and it’s very exciting,” Rosenfeld said. “There is a woodworking school that trains the next generation of artisans in Seiffen, and they’re including in their curriculum to have students win an opportunity through a competition to come and present their skills at the workshop at the Christkindlmarkt in Carmel, and we will have our first students from Seiffen coming this winter. As our sister city Seiffen becomes a part of Carmel’s history, we, in turn, are becoming a chapter in Seiffen’s 700-year plus story.”

The Carmel Christkindlmarkt partnered with the Indiana German Heritage Society and Indiana Historical Society in 2019 to bring its guests the Kulturecke—a fabulous space to explore Indiana’s rich German-American history. German immigrants contributed in many ways to the state: business, education, architecture and even Christmas traditions.
The Kinderecke (“Kids Corner”) is a special space for families to make crafts and memories together during all Market hours. In German households, it’s not uncommon to have a dedicated corner in the kitchen or family room for kids to create and do crafts.

“When the Carmel Christkindlmart made the choice to be a 501C3 [nonprofit] and really hyper-focus on being an authentic market and to represent another culture in a way that honors that [German] culture, that authentic expression of that [culture] brings permission and unity for other cultures to come in appreciation of that one being represented well,” Rosenfeld stated. “This expression of the melting pot in the United States is right here in the heart of Indiana, walking around this market together, in unity, whether they celebrate Christmas or not.”

Brand new to the Carmel Christkindlmarkt this year is the inaugural Wundernacht, which will take place on November 20 from 6 to 9 p.m., the Wednesday before the market opens. Attendees will get a first look at ALL of the merchandise available in the market’s gift huts. Wundernacht means “night of miracles”—and this won’t only be a night of fun. It’s also a fundraiser to support future cultural exchange between America and Germany, making it a festive evening you can feel good about. Hannah Kiefer, VP of Communications, shared the introduction of Feuerzangenbowle to the Carmel Christkindlmarkt.
“For (we believe) the first time at a Christkindlmarkt outside of Germany, we’re thrilled in 2024 to offer an authentic German drink: Feuerzangenbowle,” Kiefer said. “This flaming drink involves lighting a rum-soaked sugar cone on fire, then allowing the molten sugar to drip into the warm Glühwein below, creating an extra sweet, boozy treat. This delicacy will be prepared using special kettles and equipment custom-made in Austria for our market.”
